Pork Day the 13th rally on today
Another social media driven rally which aims to appeal to the Philippine government for the abolition of the pork barrel system is set on Friday.
The event is a concert protest entitled “Rock and Rage Against Pork Barrel.” Bands and celebrities are expected to join the event.
“On Pork Day the 13th, we will continue the march with art, music and performances that take a stand against the pork barrel system,” the organizer of the event wrote on their website.
The event will formally start at 3:00 p.m. with a inter-faith prayer which will be followed by an educational program with cultural performances and speeches, as well as an ecumenical mass.
The concert will start at 6:00 p.m until 10:00 p.m.
According to the organizers, the goal of the event is to inform people about the pork barrel system.
Several groups, students, professionals and religious groups are expected to join the event.
Protesters will march from different places to the venue. The militant group Bayan will march from Liwasang Bonifacio while the religious groups will march from San Agustin Church to Luneta Park.
The United Methodist Church will march from Kalaw Street while students and professionals will march from Philippine General Hospital to Luneta Park.
Bayan Southern Tagalog and Southern Tagalog Opposing Pork will gather at Calamba Laguna and march until Luneta via Liwasang Bonifacio.
“The Senate Hearings (yesterday) proves that the fight must continue against the pork barrel system. We march to Luneta, and hear the voices of our artists and musicians and rappers taking a stand against pork,” Katrina Stuart Santiago, the organizer said.
The organizers are expecting around 10, 000 people to join the event but they said they are discouraging politicians from joining the event.
