2 dead in Zamboanga crisis
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Two government troops died while six others were wounded then they tried to prevent some 50 heavily armed fighters of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) from landing at a coastal Barangay of Sta. Barbara shortly before 3:00 am Monday.
Report said that PO3 Murphy Abillana assigned with the Police Public Safety Company and a navy man died in an encounter with the MNLF troops, allegedly led by Commander Habier Malik, one of the most trusted men of MNLF Chair Nur Misuari.
Government troops, police, Army and marine soldiers wearing combat gears are now patrolling the city and looking for the armed MNLF who have held hostage about 40 civilians from Sta. Barbara.
Military’s armored personnel carrier (APC) and tanks are now ready for deployment if the MNLF will not withdraw from the city.
Residents living along the coastal Barangay of Rio Hondo, Sta. Barbara and Sta Catalina evacuated to Plaza Pershing- near city hall for safety reasons.
City Mayor Maria Isabel Climaco has convened the city crisis management committee to discuss the situation in the city. (Nonoy Lacson)
