SCUTTLEBUTT: Alexa Miro - More to her than meets the eye

Alexa Miro

She may have been hitting the headlines lately because of her love life, but up close and personal, there is so much more to the 26-year-old sexy star Alexa Miro than meets the eye.

The great find of Reality MM Studios who headlined the film “A Girl & A Guy” on Netflix and who bloomed under the tutelage of producer Dondon Monteverde and director Erik Matti, didn’t just come into the business moonlighting.

With a good head on her shoulders, Alexa was armed with a Communication Arts degree from De La Salle University when she happened to show biz, a childhood dream by her own confession. “I remember being about three or four years old and I would stand in front of our house guests, singing my heart out, dancing and entertaining them as much as I could. In school, I was always a part of the theatre club up until college. I joined beauty pageants in school, thankfully bagging the crowns, excelled in my extra curriculars and after studying I ventured into the commercial industry,” she narrated.

She owes her singing prowess to her mother who, by her account, was a professional singer who travelled the world. Alexa recalled, “she was about to release an album as a recording artist when God suddenly blessed her with a child. It was a difficult situation but not a difficult choice, she would always tell me. So, she sacrificed her career in order to raise me. Her life from that day forward was dedicated to mine.”

“My father was out of the picture a few years after I was born, however, my mother was able to take on the role of being both parents with utmost excellence. Even I cannot fathom how she was able to do so. Cliche as it may sound, she’s the best mother anyone could ever ask for and I can only pray to be half as amazing as she is once I too become a mom someday.”

Back in 2018, Alexa was chosen for the viral Jollibee Valentine’s Day special television commercial called “Signs” directed by Theodore Boborol. Following its success, she bagged a role in the hit TV series “Araw-Gabi” on ABS-CBN with Barbie Imperial and JM De Guzman.

A horror-flick for her next movie project

While acknowledging the doors of opportunities that opened for her after being discovered by photographer Xander Angeles who introduced her to Erik Matti, Alexa looks at this experience as a coming-of-age sort for her.

She said, “my first project with Reality Studios, without a doubt, paved the way for bigger opportunities to come my way. To say I am grateful would be saying the least. It has taught me to be brave, to take on an unforeseeable path, one that holds promise but cannot spare me from its possible consequences. Nonetheless I am now fearless, ready to face even bigger challenges.”

Alexa just finished filming a crime-thriller motion picture, which she cannot disclose as of yetbut suffice it to say that this is a project where her dreams are made of. She said, “my role is the title itself. When I first auditioned, I was told the meaning behind my character. Her being a representation of the Philippines, the purpose behind her name and the entire narrative. I guess the challenge it presented to me was how I could contribute to the vision behind it. I had to assess not only her significance to me, but to our targeted audience - our fellow countrymen. I needed to fully submerge myself, be completely vulnerable and open so I could give the role justice.”

Box-office success or critical acclaim?

The singer-actress is passionate as she is eloquent. When asked what she’d rather achieve between box office success or awards, she has this to say. “I would be a total hypocrite if I said box office success wasn’t as important to me as awards for my acting. The former means victory for the entire cast and crew. It’s not just about fame, though. It’s sharing that triumph with every single individual who spilled blood and tears (most times literally) into making the project possible.

“Now, the latter is very close to my heart because as an artist there is nothing I want more than to further develop my knowledge and skills, to get better and better. I want to embody what it is to be an actress and truly evolve no matter how long it takes or how many roles I have to play to get there.

“But if I have to choose one, then it would be to achieve awards for my acting. Whenever I would get asked as a kid where I see myself 10, 20 years from now, my answer remains the same. In my apartment on top of a 100-story building, drinking wine and toasting myself for all of the trophies I have amassed in acting.

Personal life or career?

Alexa admitted that a question she dreads to answer was to choose between career or personal life. She said, “I was told over and over that a healthy cohesion would not be possible and that somewhere down the road I would have to choose between the two. I don’t necessarily believe that as we have numerous celebrities who have such wonderful personal lives and harmonious families but I know it takes a lot of balance and sacrifice to attain that.

“Perhaps if this were a predicament I would need to face now, then my answer will be my career. I am still far too young to withdraw myself from everything the world has to offer me. My dreams are way too high for me to give up on them now. I have a strong purpose that is bigger than just you and me, so I must continue with a tunnel vision and refuse to let anything derail my journey getting there.”

However, Alexa makes it clear that should there be obstacles from attaining peace in her personal life, “I will take a step back and prioritize my well-being. Our health, may it be physical or mental, is to be treasured and not ignored despite our race against time to fulfill our goals.”

Message to her detractors

In terms of negative comments, Alexa wisely puts it, “I used to let them get to me. But there is a saying by Eleanor Roosevelt that stuck with me to this very day. ‘No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.’ It makes total sense. If you’re irrevocably sure of who you are, your morals and intentions, why should it matter if people think or say otherwise?”

She ends with a message to her detractors and her supporters, “please know that I take what you say with a grain of salt. I am a human being, continuously learning and growing to be a better individual every single day. Thank you for the motivation and strength you are giving me.

“To my supporters, you have no idea about the power you hold when you shower me with your unconditional love. It is overwhelming and it touches my heart to know I have people who believe in me. I would not be where I am if not for all of you.”

Confusion in the ranks of MTRCB and FDCP chairmanships

There was a clear confusion among show biz watchers over the week regarding the newly-appointed chiefs of two film-related government agencies – the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

The presumption was that MTRCB was to be headed by Johnny Revilla who took his oath before newly-elected Pres. Bongbong Marcos with his family while Tirso Cruz III was reportedly handpicked to head the FDCP. There were photos of their oath-taking before the new president to make everyone believe that indeed, their appointments were already official.

But lo and behold, after a day or so, Senate President Tito Sotto’s daughter, former Quezon City Councilor Lala Sotto-Antonio, turned out to be the new MTRCB chief.

Liza Dino on the other hand, supposedly the outgoing chairman of the FDCP to be replaced by actor Tirso Cruz III, was announced to be on a hold-over capacity in the said agency.

Joaquin and Raffa bonding with family in Tagaytay

Although there were no official announcements on the birth of their little bundle of joy last April 28 whatsoever, it looks like young actor Joaquin Domagoso’s relationship with Raffa Castro is going as strong as ever.

The couple was seen together with Raffa’s family at a getaway in Tagaytay recently. Proof of it was a photo of the happy family posted on the Instagram account of One PH news anchor Diego Castro, Raffa’s father. Diego’s wife Angela Lagunzad, who is also a newscaster at One PH, was also in the photo, along with their youngest son.

The source said the baby was named Scott Angelo Domagoso. Scott was the nickname of Joaquin’s father, former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno while Angelo is the name of Raffa’s grandfather, Angelo Castro.

FROM THE GRAPEVINE

The family of this actress are already pulling strings to convince her to go to a rehab facility. News from the grapevine has it that her erratic behavior is already causing problems at home. The family, according to the source, couldn’t trust her anymore to take care of her younger kid because she “seems to be high most of the time.” The worse part, they say, is that she calls her friends to say that her family doesn’t treat her right.
