Man suffering from mental illness hacks grandfather dead


BACOLOD CITY – An 80-year-old man was hacked to death by his 24-year-old grandson allegedly suffering from mental illness in Sitio Malusay, Barangay Caradio-an, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental on Sunday, April 21.

Police Lt. Col. Anthony Grande, Himamaylan police chief, said the suspect went to the victim’s house to visit him on Sunday, April 21.

However, the suspect allegedly hacked his grandfather with a bolo and fled. The victim sustained 11 hack wounds in the head, throat, and arms.

The body of the victim was found by his son-in-law beside a fish pond when he went to invite him for coffee  on Monday morning.

Grande said that the suspect’s family surrendered him to authorities following the  incident.

Police said that according to the suspect’s mother, he has been mentally unstable for a week and has not eaten for days.

Murder charges were filed against the suspect on Tuesday, April 23.
