House Deputy Speaker Quezon 2nd district Rep. David "Jay-jay" Suarez has chided the Chinese not just for their presence in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), but in waters on the other side of the country.

"What actually causes a bigger alarm is it seems like the [WPS] is not enough," Suarez said in a press conference Monday, May 6.

"Because last week nanduon na po sila sa Pacific Ocean, sa tapat po ng Catanduanes. So ang bigger question is, ano ang ginagawa nila dito?” he asked.

(Because last week they were in the Pacific Ocean, right beside Catanduanes. So the bigger question is, what are they doing here?)

Catanduanes is part of Bicol, which is on the eastern side of the Philippines.

The Philippine Navy had reported that a Chinese research vessel had been spotted lowering an equipment near Catanduanes. It added that the foreign vessel showed "erratic" behavior.
