P40 modern jeepney fare baseless – LTFRB

CEBU CITY – A warning that fares for modern jeepneys would increase to as high as P40 once the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) is fully implemented is baseless, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board-central Visayas (LTFRB-7) said.

The LTFRB-7 was reacting to the statement of the head of the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Piston)-Cebu who warned that jeepney operators would demand a P30 to 40 minimum fare once traditional jeepneys are phased out to pave the way for the implementation of PUVMP.

Gregory Perez, head of Piston-Cebu, said that the increase is needed to cover the loans that modern jeepney operators will have to avail to purchase modern PUVs.

“May we take the opportunity to warn the general public of the misinformation and false scenario being circulated that the minimum fare for PUJ will reach P40 when the PUV modernization program is fully implemented. Such a claim is without factual and legal basis,” the LTFRB-7 said in a statement.

The LTFRB-7 assured the public that a process has to be followed before a fare increase is implemented.

Thorough evaluation and appreciation of relevant data coming from other government agencies such as the National Economic Development Authority and Department of Energy are being considered before a fare hike is imposed.

“Fare rates are fixed and regulated by the LTFRB to protect the public. It will not be changed on the basis of speculation. Under LTFRB rules, any application for any increase of fare rates will go through a long and rigid formal evaluation process and will also be subjected to notice and hearing,” the agency said.
