WHEN Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it became known that He was at home. Many gathered together so that there was no longer room for them, not even around the door, and He preached the word to them. They came bringing to Him a paralytic carried by four men. Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above Him. After they had broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying.

IN the teaching of literature, the approaches vary, and are influenced by the "movements’ that are current and popular. When I was a student in the ‘60’s, the teaching of literature in the Philippines still followed the didactic and moral approach which the American educators had brought here. The roots of this approach date to Aristotle and Horace, who prescribed that literature had to instruct and to please. Each piece had to have a "moral lesson" and the most important question asked in our class and during exams was what this lesson was. Even for poetry! Thus the popularity (and memorization!) of such inspiring poems as "Invictus," the reflective "Ode to a Grecian Urn," the socially-motivated "Man With A Hoe," to name a few.

IN 1814, 81 years before the discovery of X-rays, Abraham Colles, a surgeon from Dublin, accurately described a fracture of the wrist that now bears his name. Colles’ fracture refers to a break in the radius, one of the forearm bones. The radius is just above the wrist on the side of the thumb.

MEDIA journalists are said to produce the first draft of history. More often, though, they end up recycling yesterday’s issues through tidbits of information that steer us in certain directions – and away from others.

THE said huge amount is the sum total of money that was sent through the banking industry, the courier service, or other systems that have been officially reported. So, there must have been more dollars sent through other means. About $ 16.4 B times P48 equals P785 B which is more than one half of our national budget of P1.4 trillion more or less.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon warned that more people could go hungry during the crisis year, in addition to the already staggering one billion people in the world suffering from extreme hunger. Speaking at the recent High Level Meeting on Food Security for All in Madrid, he said that while food prices have gone down for the time being, this is bound to be temporary and that the number of hungry people will rise again.

THERE are many verses scattered in the different Books of the Holy Bible that deals with courage. Short but emphatic phrases like: "Do not be afraid" and "Take courage." Many people define courage in different ways. To me, courage is simply doing what we are afraid to do. This is a simple definition of courage, easy to understand but assertive. Contrary to popular belief, courage is not the absence of fear but the mastery of fear. There is no courage unless we are scared.

IN last Sunday’s column, we revisited Philippine media’s PRO and CON commentaries on PGMA’s sudden side-trip to Washington, D.C. last February 5 to attend the National Prayer Breakfast (NPB), which President Obama addressed. That was Obama’s first major speech before a select international audience of 3,500 guests representing over 100 countries – and anticipated by many as an early launchpad for his foreign policy initiatives. In keeping, however, with the spiritual beginnings and religious character of the NPB, President Obama stuck to inspirational themes, mainly modern-day applications of the Golden Rule. He left it to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to announce priority US thrusts in our Asia-Pacific home region before taking off on her first trip abroad to Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and China. While in Tokyo, Clinton gave strong warnings against Nokor missile testing and nuclear weapons proliferation.

New York – A succession of Fashion Week shows over the weekend suggested that you’d better put down that muffin, dear. There are a lot of tight leather pants on the horizon. And leggings with little witch booties. The female behind is again in the fore of fashion, though skinny models hardly exercise the imagination. They’re like whirling toothpicks.
