ABS-CBN launches Sports+Action
Studio 23 has been replaced by ABS-CBN Sports+Action, a new sports channel that will create a unique and engaging sports hub for Filipino sports fans.
This includes the coverage of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the Azkals, Top Rank fights, ALA Boxing bouts, National Basketball Association (NBA), the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and the upcoming 2014 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup.
At the launch held recently, ABS-CBN Narrowcast head March Ventosa said he believes that sports play an important role in the lives of Filipinos. “They are source of metaphors to become the best… We will give this channel our best shot,” he said.
ABS-CBN Integrated Sports head Dino Laurena said that entertainment programs will help them gain more audiences especially if there is no sport event happening.
“The programming on sports was about 70 percent of the total channel… 10 percent is news then mga 20 percent ’yung entertainment…” Laurena said.
Asked why they launched it only now, Laurena answered, “Knowing ABS-CBN kung ’di namin kakayanin to bring the best content to the audience then we will not be risking our name, but I think… ABS-CBN was able to build a track record in sports, so we think that it is now the right time to engage in sports channel.”
The channel will not only offer sports shows, but will keep its viewers up-to-date with current events via “News+” with Anthony Taberna. Joining him in the news program is actress Jef Gaitan who will deliver showbiz news.
“Ang ‘News+’ plus ay kakaiba sa ibang news program dahil dito po ay makikipag-kuwentuhan kami… kakausapin namin ang mga tao na gustong malaman ang mga balita… ito po ay conversational na news program… meron din kaming showbiz,” Taberna said.
TJ Manotoc will be hosting “The Score,” a 15-minute daily sports program that will tackle the biggest stories in sports.
“Dito po sa ABS-CBN Sports+Action, mabibiigyan tayo ng daily news just for sports news… pati po features ng ating favorite stars sa lahat ng sports,” Manotoc said.
Joining Manotoc are former Ateneo volleyball player Gretchen Ho, former beauty queen Tina Marasigan and actor-comedian Boom Labrusca.
Aside from the series “The Ultimate Fighter: China,” “Zero Hours,” “CSI,” “NCIS,” “Once Upon A Time” and “WWE,” ABS-CBN Sports+Action will relive the films of “The King of Philippine Movies” Fernando Poe Jr.
