A man was arrested after he got overpowered by the sacristan mayor he took hostage inside a chapel in Quezon City Wednesday morning.
The firearm was found only to be a toy gun.
Superintendent Marcelino Pedrozo, commander of the Cubao Police Station, identified the arrested hostage taker as Roel Sabaceo, 38, a resident of Atimonan, Quezon.
Pedrozo said that Sabaceo was arrested following the brief hostage taking incident that began at around 6 am inside the Immaculate Concepcion Chapel located along Lantana St., Barangay Immaculate Concepcion, Cubao.
Investigator SPO1 Jose Sariano said that a prayer meeting was taking place inside the chapel that morning.
Praying parishioners were alarmed when they saw the suspect entere the chapel and started pointing his gun.
The suspect then grabbed hold of sacristan mayor Cicero Reterta, 42, and dragged him into the radio room. A guard of the chapel followed the suspect at the still open radio room.
Soriano described the suspect as mentally unstable.
The sacristan mayor told police that he was being told by Sabaceo to call the media but failed to say what his demands were.
When he had the chance, Retarte grabbed hold of the gun and a struggle ensued.
Seeing this, the guard helped Retarte in subduing the suspect and the gun was eventually taken from him. The gun was found to be only a toy.
In the meantime, Soriano said that he still has difficulty talking with the suspect to get information about himself.
