President Duterte has directed the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to continue to safeguard the country's maritime borders and protect the people from threats that may come at sea.
The President issued the directive to sustain the country's maritime security during the 117th anniversary celebration of the PCG in Manila last Thursday.

"I urge the entire Philippine Coast Guard to build on its accomplishments and to continue its efforts in upholding our country’s maritime security," Duterte said in his remarks.
"More than ever, we need brave men and women like you in safeguarding our seas and shores, especially at this period when our resources are becoming crucial to the progress of our economy," he said.
Duterte also vowed to further enhance the PCG's capability in law enforcement activities by acquiring modern equipment, among others.
"Rest assured that while you heed the call of duty, the government remains steadfast in strengthening the capabilities of the PCG by raising its standards streamlined infrastructure and modernized equipment," he said.
The President, meantime, lauded the Coast Guard for its achievements in more than a century, saying their enforcement of the maritime law and protection of marine environment and territories have kept the country safe.
Duterte said he was also glad that the reforms instituted by his administration in 2016 have started to bear fruit.
"The PCG’s acquisition of new weapons, equipment, and several multi-purpose response vessels and fast patrol boats that are complete with modern computerized systems has indeed helped enhance our law enforcement capabilities," he said.
He also recognized the contribution of the Coast Guard officers and enlisted men, saying the success of the PCG would not have been possible without them.
"Their personal achievements which have pushed for the developments that are crucial in making the agency more efficient and responsive to the challenges of the times and to the demands of our citizens," he said.
He urged the Coast Guard to stay committed to performing their duty "as defenders of the land and protectors of our citizens."
"Please know that all your sacrifices are truly and greatly appreciated," he added.
