6.4-magnitude quake cuts water service in Surigao del Sur town
DAVAO CITY – Residents of Hinatuan town of Surigao del Sur province are experiencing water service interruption after service lines of the Hinatuan Water District were damaged due to a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that hit the province Monday morning.

In its Facebook page, the Hinatuan Water District advised its concessionaires that water services were temporarily shut off after several service lines were damaged due to the earthquake.
The water district also told Manila Bulletin that the whole Hinatuan proper was affected by the water interruption.
“As of now the rest of the technical team is doing a repair and checking of all lines that were affected during the earthquake,” it said.
It added that they still have to determine how long the water service interruption will last.
However, they said that they will “do everything we can to restore our service (back) to normal operation today.”
Meanwhile, several commercial establishments and a local parish in Hinatuan also reported minor damage due to the earthquake.
The St. Augustine Parish in Hinatuan posted images of broken ceilings and damaged floor, while store owners shared videos of their goods in disarrayed shelves due to the tremor.
The earthquake's epicenter was reported at 11 kilometers northwest of San Agustin in Surigao del Sur with a depth of 58 kilometers.
The earthquake was tectonic in origin. Intensity 5 was felt in Bislig City.
“Mayor Shem G. Garay, MDRRMC (Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council) chairman, ordered the fast-tracking of assessment of buildings, roads and other infrastructures damaged by the strong earthquake,” it added.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the epicenter of the quake was traced 11 kilometers northwest of the municipality of San Agustin in Surigao Del Sur at 6:37 a.m.
The quake had a depth of 58 kilometers and was tectonic in origin which was caused by ground shaking primarily due to the sudden movement in the Earth's plates, Phivolcs said.
According to the state seismology bureau, the tremor was felt with a maximum intensity of Intensity V or “strong shaking” in Bislig City also in Surigao del Sur.
At Intensity V, Phivolcs said the earthquake was generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors, and many sleeping people were awakened because of the strong shaking or rocking.
Meanwhile, Phivolcs also recorded instrumental Intensities in the following areas:
• Intensity IV-Bislig City
• Intensity III-Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental
• Intensity II-Cagayan de Oro City; Surigao City, Surigao del Norte
• Intensity I-Alabel, Sarangani; Koronadal City and Tupi town in South Cotabato; Kidapawan City in Cotabato; Palo, Leyte; and Borongan City in Eastern Samar. (With a report from Alexandria Dennise San Juan)
