Quick facts about meningococcemia

The Department of Health has warned anew of the deadly meningococcemia, after a 60-year-old woman from Carmen, Cebu, died allegedly of the said disease.

The following are some quick facts on meningococcemia:

  • Meningococcemia is caused by the bacteria Neisseria Meningitides
  • Mode of spread: close contact with infected persons through sneezing and coughing
  • Some carriers do not exhibit symptoms
  • Bacteria do not thrive in inanimate objects
  • Characterized by headache, nausea, vomiting, seizure and convulsions, and map-like rashes
  • Usually lasts from two to ten days, and becomes fatal when a person develops septic shock

The public is advised to avoid crowded places and boost immune system through exercise, proper diet, and enough rest.
