The cool bug eye

Style icon Jackie Kennedy-Onassis made sunglasses with big frames a chic cult trend back in the ‘60s, but it’s the young celebrities of the 21st century who have revived the cool bug eye. The Olsen Twins, Paris Hilton, and Nicole Richie brought back the craze, deploying the outsize frames as shields from paparazzi camera flashes.

I recently discovered a drawer full of my mom’s vintage shades from the ‘70s. My dad had made a special drawer for my mom, just for her funky stylish eyewear—and I’m the lucky heiress! I was able to find brands such as Jean Patou, Nina Ricci, Rochas, and Givenchy, and sported these every Sunday when I had lunch with my family. And, at every luncheon, I bring with each pair special memories of their courtship and the early stages of their marriage (but that’s another story). They were also quick to point out that all those sunglasses were quite expensive at that time, since only a few dared to wear trendy shades and the manufacturing costs were pretty steep. My mom also had freckles, so she sought comfort in hiding and protecting them from the sun with these bug-eyed babies.

But, unlike those times where every stylish piece was pricey, we now have a plethora of brands, in different price ranges, to choose from. For those who are on a budget, FLY shades are your best friend. Priced from P249 and up, it has a great variety of eyewear (retro-inspired, sporty and classic styles) that boasts of UV400-coated lenses and lifetime warranty, too! Anne Curtis, the brand’s image model, loves the KELLY model, which has three white stripes on the side—as seen on the brand’s billboards. Tortoise and colorful frames are also a hit, so do try them on when you visit any of FLY’s kiosks.
