I used to play with my mom’s makeup back in the ‘80s, copying the looks of that decade’s icons like Madonna and Kylie Minogue by swiping blue eyeshadow on my lids. Then these bright, bold blues took a backseat in the ‘90s, to brown tints and matte lips. But we fell in love with this powerful shade again when Gucci, Anna Sui, and Temperley London presented their Spring-Summer ’09 collections with models sporting the latest beauty trend. 

Summer is, indeed, here with blues inspired by the colors of the ocean.

For 2009, these blues are a refreshing sight on the runways and on the red carpet. With a gamut of shades seen on models and celebrities—from matte navy to silver blue—there’s a hue that will match your complexion, personality, and style.

To make eyes appear bigger and brighter, women can line their eyes with dark blue pencils (for an elegant evening look), or cerulean (for a more youthful vibe).  Going to a party?  A refreshing option would be smoky eyes in cobalt mixed with metallic silver.  Women who are not afraid to experiment can try bright pops of aqua and tons of mascara for a dramatic but playful effect.
