Alabang tops WGAP leg
Alabang dominated the field on its home turf as it captured two of the three division titles disputed while finishing runner-up in the other as action in the 2009 WGAP (Women's Golf Association of the Phils.) circuit got under way last Monday at the Alabang Country Club.
With Marilyn Reyes scoring a gross 80 worth 39 points under the PAL scoring system, and Fenina Gorres (83), Rita Horan (84) and Lorna Tabuena (83) adding 36 points each, Alabang pooled a 147 to beat Canlubang by five points for the Class A crown in the kickoff leg of the annual series among the country's top lady golfers.
Canlubang, the defending overall champion, settled for runner-up honors with a 142, led by Flordeluna Silao's 38 points, while Sta. Elena, also drawing 39 points from Daisy Din-Jackes, finished third with a 136.
Forest Hills wound up fourth with a 135 followed by Riviera (128), Manila Soutwoods (126), Villamor (122), Aguinaldo (122) and Orchard (111) in that order.
Riviera's Beth Menchavez, meanwhile, carded a gross 83 worth 41 points as she took the individual crown in the premier class of the event organized by WGAP. Joyce Duque of Alabang reigned in Class B with 36 points while Ok Young Kwon of Valley took the Class C diadem with 41 points.
The host club also posted a three-point win over Valley in Class C as Tes Yap scored 35 points and Ana Luisa Mendoza, Rachel Shah and Minerva Castillo tossed in 34, 33 and 32 points, respectively.
Valley finished second with 131 while Sta. Elena placed third with a 125. Canlubang and Villamor made identical 120s while Aguinaldo had 118, Forest Hills turned in a 108, Tagaytay Highlands pooled a 107 and Southwoods had 103.
Alabang fell short by one point to complete a sweep but started out the 10-leg circuit in grand fashion as it finished runner-up in Class B topped by Southwoods.
The Carmona-based squad assembled a 138 to bag the crown with Alabang settling for second with a 137 and Canlubang winding up third with a 129. Forest Hills finished with 120 followed by Sta. Elena (118), Orchard (112) and Phil. Navy (101).
Meanwhile, the second leg will be held May 25 at Forest Hills in Antipolo.
