Go from diabolical to divine in ‘Supernatural’

June 4, 2009, 9:37am

The highly-anticipated latest season of “Supernatural” will debut first and exclusively on AXN Beyond to reveal the destinies of the Winchester brothers after season 3’s cliff-hanger ending! Last season closed with Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) plunging into the bottomless pits of hell, mortally wounded. Having returned Sam (Jared Padalecki) to life through a deal with the Crossroads Demon, Dean’s soul was to be lost to hell for eternity – or so we thought...

As the new season picks up months after Dean’s chest was ripped to ribbons, he awakes in a pine box buried underground. Clawing his way back into the realm of the living, Dean is surprisingly unscathed, save for a palm imprint on his arm. Just who or what hauled him back from hell? And why?

The mystery saviour gradually reveals itself to be a presence whose voice shatters glass, and all who attempt to glimpse its true form end up with eyes burnt out of their sockets. Unheard of in the history of “Supernatural,” the being is able to scare off all demons and is celestial in origin…

The latest season of “Supernatural” premiered in the US to 4 million viewers, an all-time high since the second season in 2006, with new fans driving a 12% jump in the total number of viewers. The overwhelming reception to the latest season was attributed to the intriguing new mythological arc which introduces angel, Castiel (Misha Collins, “24”), who was voted as one of “Top Ten Best New Supporting Characters of 2008” by TV.com. And yes, he was the one who pulled Dean out of hell, but for a motive yet-to-be revealed.

Do not expect holy halos and fluffy white wings on Castiel and his fellow angels; instead brace yourself for trench coats and tough talk as they are warrior angels who have scarcely interacted with humans in the last two millennia, and have taken orders only from God. This time, it seems the Almighty has taken a fancy to Dean Winchester.

While Sam and fellow hunter and supernatural researcher, Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver, “Deadwood”) are ecstatic over Dean’s revival, not all is rosy. In the time that Dean was gone, a vengeful and desolate Sam tried to hunt down Lilith, the demon which damned his brother’s soul to perdition, but with no success. In the process, Sam hones lethal telekinetic abilities despite having promised Dean he would reject powers of the dark side, training under Ruby (Genevieve Cortese, “Wildfire”), a demon who has been helping the brothers since the previous season for motives yet-to-be revealed. For Dean, painful memories of his time in the burning pits of hell are initially lost, but will be back to haunt him. Although the brothers are reunited, apocalypse looms with Lilith working stealthily to break 66 mystical seals to unleash the ultimate evil – Lucifer.

As the Winchester brothers battle the most unconventional of horrors behind folklore and superstition – sirens in a strip club; illusionists dabbling in black magic (in an episode cheekily titled “Criss Angel is a Douche Bag”); as well as “Dracula,” the “Werewolf” and the “Mummy” (in a special black-and-white episode), the beginnings of a brotherly rift slips in.

Bound by blood and tragedy, Sam and Dean had been inseparable through their lives especially after their father’s demise. However, secrets and suspicion have begun to fester between the brothers to drive them further away from each other. Will Sam’s newly acquired dark powers and Dean’s otherworldly guardians cast them into different camps?

Viewers can also expect a nostalgic look at the Winchesters, with flashbacks of Sam and Dean back in high school, as well as their parents John and Mary in better times, along with the very first appearance of the brothers’ maternal grandfather Samuel Campbell (Mitch Pileggi, “X Files”).

Promising to be the most gripping season yet, “Supernatural” counts the impending apocalypse, angels of a fiery brand, the mystery behind Dean’s survival, as well as the changing dynamics between Sam and Dean – now increasingly torn between Heaven and Hell – in the greatest test of their brotherhood yet. Brace for the latest hell–raising season of “Supernatural” this June, first and exclusively on AXN Beyond!

“Supernatural Season 4” premieres June 5, airing Fridays, 9 p.m., first and exclusively on AXN Beyond.
