The kinds of dads in showbiz are as varied as the genres of comedy, action and drama.

Senator Bong Revilla says of his style in disciplining his children: “Yung tama, tama, yung mali, mali.”

And yet for all the sternness, he makes it a point to spend quality time with his kids.

In celebration of Father’s Day on June 21, Manila Bulletin Online lists five other kinds of dads in showbiz.

Eddie Gutierrez: The Celebrity Dad

“Syempre as a father, gusto mo maging masaya ang pamilya mo,” said actor Eddie Gutierrez at the height of an intrigue haunting his daughter, Ruffa.

The father of heartthrob Richard, TV host Raymond, beauty queen-actress Ruffa, and actors Tonton and Ramon Christopher, Eddie could easily claim that he is today’s celebrity dad with the most number of successful kids in showbiz.

“I’m very lucky I have well-behaved kids,” the veteran actor said in an interview.

Eddie described his kids (with Annabelle Rama) Ruffa, Elvis, Rocky, twins Richard and Raymond, Richie Paul, (with Liza Lorena), Tonton and Ramon Christopher (with Pilita Corrales), as people who know how to treat others well.

“I was also an adventurous man in my youth. Pero once I settled down, I made a big change in my life. I live by example. What they see in me, they follow,” he said.

His style as a father is almost the same as Revilla’s.

“I’m strict when I have to be strict, and lenient when I have to be lenient,” Eddie revealed.

Vic Sotto: The ‘Bossing’ Dad

“Hindi naman ako strikto,” said Vic Sotto in describing himself as a dad. “Nasa tamang timpla lang ang lahat.”

Senior host of the noontime show, “Eat Bulaga,” and an actor-producer of hits like “Enteng Kabisote,” Vic Sotto has earned the monicker ‘Bossing’ for being helpful not only to his kids but to his colleagues.

“He won’t get into your business right away pero alam mo in-oobserve ka niya,” eldest daughter Danica Sotto-Pingris said. She confirmed that her dad is very loving and takes to heart the welfare of his loved ones and friends.

Aside from being dad to Danica and Oyo Boy (with Dina Bonnevie), Vico (with Coney Reyes), and Paulina (with Angela Luz), he acts as one to his M-Zet Productions employees, and to his friends like Richie D’Horsie whom he helped be released from jail.

Vic is also a proud grandfather. “Lolo na ako (to Danica’s son, Jean Michele), katulad ni Dolphy… noong una medyo naiinggit ako kay Dolphy. Ngayon pareho na kaming lolo.”

Arnell Ignacio: The Gay Dad

TV host-comedian Arnell Ignacio is as proud to be a dad to his daughter, Sofia as he is about being gay.

“I don’t have a partner… (or) at least I don’t have a partner who’s qualified to bear a child,” the comedian-businessman quipped.

Added Arnell: “I’m blessed with a daughter, Sofia. She’s very bright, does well in school… walang binibigay sa ‘king problema. Mabait na bata.”

“Ang pagiging tatay ko consistent sa rules, sa training… Para hindi nalilito yung bata pag lumalaki na.”

He advised parents: “(Give them) all the time that you can give. Nasa bahay kayo, kumain kayo ng sabay. Yung uniporme, kung masikip, alam mo na kailangan mas malaki. Sapatos niya, alam mo kung masikip… Ito yung hindi spectacular na bonding pero solid.”

Gary Valenciano: The Inspirational Dad

"I told my children when they were young, 'You don't have to be like your dad.'”

Gary, a local icon for his vocal prowess and performing style, is aware of how hard it is for his kids to be in the entertainment industry due to his initial successes.

Yet it does not stop him from encouraging his children Paolo, Gab and Keanna to equal or even surpass his achievements.

"I think any father or mother would be flattered if the feedback they get whenever their kids perform with them, is that their children are much better than their parents. 'Gab dances better than you!' or 'Paolo sings better than you!' Things like that,” he said.

“To say that I am proud [of my kids] is an understatement: To say that I'm blessed is more like it."

Ramon Revilla, Sr.: Daddy Defender

"I don't have many children; far less than a hundred," former senator Ramon Revilla, Sr. once said.

Rumored to have sired about a hundred kids, the former senator’s own daughter, Rowena, clarified the reports.

“I have a list... we're only 45. The oldest is...I'm not sure...around 50-years –old. The youngest is about 4, 5 years old.”

Whatever their ages, Revilla, Sr. will be remembered as the statesman who gave legitimacy to illegitimate kids.

Revilla, Sr. initiated the amendment to the Family Code, enacted into law on February of 2004, stating: "That illegitimate children may use the surname of their father if their affiliation has been expressly recognized by the father through the record of birth appearing in the civil register, or when an admission in a public document or private handwritten instrument is made by the father."

"The child should not suffer the stigma of his illegitimacy," Revilla said.
