Mayor Joy joins women rights groups in celebrating Women's Month in QC
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte joined women rights advocates in celebrating the Women’s Month during the Purple Action Day led by the Commission of Human Rights of the Philippines (CHR) on Wednesday, March 1.
The Purple Action Day program, held at the Liwasang Diokno, CHR Headquarters in the city, was attended by around 300 members of woman rights organizations including Gabriela and Sarilaya, according to the Quezon City Police District.
“It is indeed our time to shine. We in the local government of Quezon City are one with the Commission of Human Rights, under its new Focal Commissioner Ms. Faydah Dumarpa, and other stakeholders such as Sarilaya and Gabriela in celebrating the strength of women and our invaluable contributions to society,” Belmonte said during her speech broadcast live on Commission of Human Rights of the Philippines’ Facebook page.
The mayor shared the stories of some women who were able to achieve goals and provide for their families through determination and assistance from various city government programs.
“These days, we often hear of stellar examples of women leaders in politics and in different industries. More girls are receiving the benefits of education and women have consistently made it to the top of the Bar and Board Examinations. However, there are still many challenges faced by many Filipino women today.
She said that a lot of women are still part of the informal sector of workers who are not accorded of proper rights and benefits, while others are victims of harassment/abuse.
Belmonte also shared some of the cities initiatives to provide opportunities for women and protect their rights such as the establishment of the Gender and Development Council Office that implements gender and development-related programs; the city’s urban farms and over 60,000 green jobs where 70 percent of the workers are women; and the “Tindahan ni Ate Joy” that already provided livelihood assistance to over 2,600 female micro-entrepreneurs in the city.
Persons deprived of liberty at the Quezon City Jail Female Dormitory were also given opportunities through Alternative Learning System and livelihood workshops that will help them once they reintegrate to the community.
The mayor said that the city has zero tolerance to harassment and abuse against women.
She said that the city has a shelter for victims of violence against women and children (VAWC). It also provides psychosocial and legal aid through the QC Protection Center.
The city also has a centralized database, launched in 2021, that speeds up tracking, response and processing of reported VAWC cases.
The mayor also told the women in the event that all process in the city were already digitalized to provide convenience for them and avoid long queues at the City Hall. They can also quickly report VAWC incidents to authorities through the city’s helpline 122.
Belmont said that the city has received various recognition from different agencies for their AWC efforts which inspire them to do more for the protection of women’s rights.
“Indeed here in Quezon City, no woman is left behind,” Belmonte said.
According to CHR Commissioner Faydah Dumarpa, the Purple Action Day has been a space for making the women’s voice heard; to seek accountability, resist and surface urgent issues; and for solidarity since it started in 2016.
Gabriela and Sarilaya are organizations that promote women’s rights and empowerment.
