San Sebastian College tries to stretch its unbeaten run to six when it battles the struggling Angeles University Foundation while College of St. Benilde shoots for its fourth win against Emilio Aguinaldo College on Monday in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Stags meet the Great Danes at 4 p.m. with Recto-based dribblers expected to lean anew on the sweet-shooting guard Jimbo Aquino, who has been instrumental to the team’s resurgence early this season.
With Aquino at the helm, the Stags, who missed the Final Four last season, are on a sizzling start with five straight wins in as many outings.
Aquino prove he is San Sebastian’s go-to guy in the team’s 80-49 triumph over Arellano last week as he exploded for 27 points highlighted with five triples. He scattered 17 markers in the first half that sparked the Stags’ 23-0 start, which served as the springboard to their victory.
SSC coach Ato Agustin commended Aquino for his awesome showing lately.
“I’m happy for him. I think he’s reaping the gains of his hard work. He really works hard in practice and leads by example,” Agustin said of Aquino, who also starred for 26 points when the Stags dealt the defending champion San Beda its lone setback so far, 83-77.
Against the Pampanga-based Great Danes, who dropped their last three games including the recent a 53-82 loss against the Jose Rizal University last Wednesday, the Stags are heavily favored to prevail.
A win by the Stags will untangle themselves from a two-way tie with last year’ runner up JRU at the helm for the solo lead.
The Blazers and the Generals raise the curtain at 2 p.m. with the former seeking to assume the solo fourth spot while the latter hoping to follow up their initial win.
An equal, tough fight is expected from both squads, which are coming off contrasting routes.
The Blazers absorbed a slim 63-64 loss to Perpetual, while the Generals finally scored their first win at the expense Mapua, 80-69.
