BACOLOD CITY - Lt. Col. Jovie Espenido, head of the City Drug Enforcement Unit (CDEU), returned to work on Wednesday and vowed to wipe the city clean of its tag as a “shabulized city” due to the proliferation of illegal drugs.

Espenido, in a press briefing at the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) headquarters here, vowed to eradicate the city’s drug problem during his tenure.
Espenido, also BCPO’s deputy city director for operations, said that arrested drug suspects in various areas in the Visayas reportedly identified Bacolod as the alleged source of illegal drugs.
“Kayo sa Bacolod, magsalita kayo kung saan galing ang drugs. Hanapin natin,” he said.
Espenido said that policemen should be committed and dedicated to run after big drug personalities to put an end to the drug problem.
“Hindi ba kayo napupuno? Humuhuli kayo bawat araw. Hindi natatapos. Walang katapusan. Yung iba nanghuhuli for compliance na lang. Nandito tayo para magtrabaho,” he said, as he urged station commanders to be consistent in the arrest of significant drug personalities.
Espenido urged the people to speak and tell the authorities their knowledge about the source of the illegal drugs.
Based on the records of the BCPO in 2019, the city police force has seized a total of P73,031,459.20 worth of illegal drugs from January to December.
Of the total, P72,996,312 worth of 6,083.026 grams of shabu and P35,147.20 worth of 152.8139 grams of marijuana were confiscated last year.
A total of 623 anti-illegal drug operations were conducted which resulted in the arrest of 962 persons, including 111 high value targets, 115 street level targets, 20 minors, and 715 newly-identified drug personalities. One person died during police operation, BCPO records showed.
Authorities previously said that illegal drugs pass through different seaports in Negros Occidental, making it as an alleged transshipment area for the entry of the contraband.
Six drug groups are being monitored by the police in the Negros island, Espenido said.
