'Jolina' makes landfall in Aurora
Tropical storm “Jolina” made landfall in Aurora province on Saturday afternoon, prompting the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to raise public storm signal No. 2 over the provinces of Aurora, Isabela, and Cagayan.
PAGASA also raised public storm signal No. 1 over Batanes, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan, La Union, Abra, Quirino, Ifugao, Benguet, Mountain Province, Kalinga, Apayao, Nueva Viscaya, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Tarlac, Zambales, Pampanga, and Northern Quezon.
In its 5 p.m. weather update on Saturday, the weather office said that the storm made landfall over Casiguran, Aurora at 4 p.m. PAGASA said provinces under storm signal No. 2 will experience stormy weather with winds from 60 to 100 kilometers per hour (kph).
Coastal communities were also warned to be alert for waves as high as six meters in rough to very rough sea conditions.
Provinces under storm signal No. 1 will experience rains and gusty winds of from 30 to 60 kph, PAGASA said.
It also warned against flashfloods and landslides in low-lying areas and in places near mountain slopes.
PAGASA said that before making landfall, Jolina packed winds of up to 75 kph near the center and gusts of up to 90kph. It was moving west northwest at 17 kph but was expected to slow upon reaching landfall.
It is expected to be in the vicinity of Laoag City by Monday morning.
The tropical storm will continue to bring rains and gusty winds and generate moderate to rough seas over the rest of Northern and Central Luzon while the remaining areas of Luzon will experience occasional to frequent rains, PAGASA said.
It said cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms will prevail over the Visayas and Mindanao.
Jolina will continue to affect Luzon until early next week, said PAGASA.
Meanwhile, PAGASA spotted another Low Pressure Area (LPA) at about 630 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora that was expected to enhance the surge of Southwest monsoon.
