Quiapo vendors warned anew
"Guerrilla vendors" who have mushroomed around the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church) should voluntarily pack their counterfeit products or be forcefully evicted from the area, a Manila Police official warned Saturday.
The warning was made by Manila Police District (MPD)-Station 3 Commander Supt. Ernesto Tendero
Jr. after receiving reports that several vendors of bogus herbal medicine, most of which are allegedly
used for abortion, continue their illegal trade despite numerous times that their stalls were demolished by MPD-Station 3 Special Reaction Group (SRG).
"Nakatanggap kami ng ulat na nagbebenta pa rin ng illegal na paninda ang ilang vendors sa pamamagitan ng “guerrilla style” o palihim na uri ng pangangalakal. Kung nais pa nilang maisalba ang ibinebenta nilang kalakal, ay umalis na sila sa lugar," Tendero told reporters.
Tendero ordered MPD-Station 3 SRG chief, Senior Police Officer 4 Reynaldo Bautista to scour the Quiapo and Sta. Cruz area and weed out the illegal traders who have been selling not only abortive, herbal medicines but also counterfeit items.
The items that his men will seize from the vendors will be locked inside their storage for good, the police officer said.
Last week, MPD conducted several raids in the bustling area of Quiapo on which they were able to confiscate more than P100,000 worth of Cytotec. They likewise seized 30 sacks of pirated Digital Video Discs (DVD) and Video Compact Disc (VCD) movies in the said area, according to Tendero.
Tendero noted that they will strictly implement the directives of Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim that traders with business permits will only be allowed to do their trade from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Mondays to Fridays while they will be allowed to conduct business from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday.
