San Sebastian College started slow, but found its rhythm in time to turn back Angeles University Foundation, 81-69, on Monday to notch its 10th straight win and keep its immaculate record in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

What was expected to be a lopsided game for the Stags turned out to be a big scare as the Great Danes kept the game close all throughout before running
out of gas in the final stretch.

“Hindi ko alam kung ano ang nagyari,” SSC mentor Ato Agustin said. “Masyado silang nag-relax. Siguro dahil alam nila down na down ang kalaban.”

The Stags’ victory came before Jose Rizal University moved closer to the top with a 82-68 win over University
of Perpetual Help.

It was the eighth win in 10 starts for the Heavy Bombers who handed the Altas their seventh loss against three victories.

Gilbert Bulawan led a balanced SSC attack with 18 points while Jimbo Aquino, the league’s leading scorer, had a double-double performance with 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Stags repeated over the Great Danes, whom they beat, 97-65, during their first meeting in the first round.

But unlike in their first meeting where they even led by as much as 53 points, the Stags found the Danes a tougher nut to crack this time.

The Pampanga-based Great Danes looked on course for a major upset early when they led 29-28 early in the second canto, and had it not been for a third quarter explosion presided over by John Raymundo and Aquino and Bulawan, the Stags could have been in bigger trouble.

The troika joined forces in torching the net as the Stags kept the Danes at bay, 61-55, at the end of the third.

The Stags finally took control after holding the Danes to only four points and one field goal in the first seven minutes of the fourth for a commanding
77-61 lead, time down to 2:39.
