UAAP beach volleyball fires off May 27

While indoor volleyball action is ongoing in the UAAP Season 84, the men's beach volleyball is set to kick off with back-to-back champion University of Santo Tomas opening its title retention bid on Friday, May 27.

The beach volleyball tournament, just like other sports that were halted at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic two years ago, follows a compressed schedule and takes place outside Mall of Asia Arena at the SM Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.

The tournament only spans six days from May 27 to June 5 with three matches played, respectively, for the morning (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.) and afternoon (2 p.m. to 4 p.m.) sessions.

One team gets a bye per session as each match spans at least an hour.

Four days are allotted for the elimination round while Day 4 marks the playoffs, if necessary, in the afternoon.

The semifinal round will be played on June 4 with the top-ranked and second-seeded team getting the twice-to-beat advantage. Finals are slated June 5.

Unlike previous tournaments, the team composition will have an additional "Covid" reserve player aside from the alternate player and two regular members.

Antigen testing will be conducted on May 27 and May 29 and on June 3 in observance of health protocols.

The UST men's beach volleyball team has won three titles in four seasons since Season 79 in 2016.
