Peacemaker hacked to death in Leyte

TACLOBAN CITY – A 57-year-old farmer was hacked to death after he tried to pacify his drinking buddy who threatened his live-in partner with a bladed weapon during a drinking session on Thursday, July 6, in Barangay Tabunoc, Villaba, Leyte. Police identified the victim as Rufino Mariquit. Investigation said Mariquit and the suspect, Carlos Camugao, 60, were having a drinking session outside Camugao's house. A heated argument ensued when the suspect’s live-in partner, Thelma Arnoco, asked them to stop drinking. Camugao got a long bladed weapon locally known as “sundang,” prompting Arnoco to run away. The victim approached the suspect to advise him to keep his cool but instead of heeding, Camugao hacked the victim multiple times in the neck, killing him on the spot. Camugao brought the body of the victim to the riverbank where it was later discovered by residents of nearby Barangay Cagnocot, Villaba. Police arrested the suspect in his house where the murder weapon was recovered.
