San Sebastian College hurdled another road block in its bid for a two-round sweep of the elimination round as the Stags trampled Perpetual Help, 80-70, for their 11th straight win in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament on Friday at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Stags broke free in the final period and cruised to a series of double-digit leads en route to the win that fortified their hold of the solo top spot.

Jimbo Aquino, the league’s top scorer, dished out another brilliant performance as he chalked up 18 points he highlighted with eight rebounds as the Stags moved seven victories away from completing a sweep of the double-round eliminations.

The Stags will also try to eclipse the 13-0 sweep they carved out in 1997, the year they claimed their fifth straight title, the longest championship run in league history.

“Alam na nila ang gagawin nila kaya confident ako sa panalong ito,” said SSC mentor Ato Agustin.

In the first game, defending champion San Beda College turned to Riego Gamalinda, Jake Pascual and Sudan Daniel in the final stretch as the Red Lions survived the gritty stand of the Mapua Cardinals, 84-75.

The victory bolstered the Final Four bid of the Red Lions, who improved to 9-1, a record good enough for solo second spot.

Pascual led the Lions’ charge with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Garvo Lanete had 17 and David Marcelo had 10 markers for the Red Lions, who stretched their unbeaten run to eight games.

In juniors’ action, four-time defending champion Staglets trounced the Altalettes, 91-78, to notch their eighth win in 11 outings, while the Red Cubs turned back the Red Robins, 100-70.

Trailing the Stags, 47-30, in the first half, the Altas threatened to turn the table when they moved to within seven points, 47-54, on a Raffy Ynion jumper midway through the third.

With the win, the Stags repeated over the Altas, whom they beat in the first round, 76-64.
