“Wonder Mom” salutes kiddie heroes
There’s a hero in each of us regardless of age or social backgrounds.
In commemoration of National Heroes Day, broadcast journalist Karen Davila pays tribute to children, who have done good to others and became heroes in their own little ways today (Aug 29) in “Wonder Mom.”
Karen interviews 10-year-old Kesz Valdez, who is an active volunteer of the Dynamic Teen Company. The group is composed of young people who undertake small projects that can make a significant difference in other people’s lives. Kesz is currently the Hygiene Demonstrator for the group and teaches basic hygiene to streetchildren through their K4 (Kariton Klasrum Klinik with Kantin).
But before she became the little hero that she is now, Kesz was a victim of an accident when she was 5 years old. Her whole body got burned when she was pushed on a flaming tire during a stampede and since then, she was adopted and treated by the said group.
Meanwhile, as Karen features heroic deeds done by kids, child star Yong-An will meet 3-year-old Patrick Gabriel Gonzales, who is an avid superhero toy collector. He has about 200 to 300 pieces, from X-men, Transformers, Batman, to Spiderdman.
Don’t miss all these exciting stories today (Aug 29) in “Wonder Mom,” hosted by Karen Davila on ABS-CBN.
Dear Wondermom and Moms&Babies,
I just gave birth last January 18 via Cesarean. As a new mom, I have lots of things that bother me. Why is it that tips from my relatives are different from the advice of my baby’s pediatrician? An example is my mother, who tells me to use baby oil and “bigkis” so that my baby won't have “kabag.” But my pedia disapproves. Baby oil would just cause rashes and the use of “bigkis” causes discomfort. Who should I follow? How can I bathe my baby without accidentally putting water into his ears? Lastly, what can I do to whiten my underarms?

Karen Davila: I can relate to your problem! When I gave birth to my two boys, I got various advice from my mom, aunt, and friends on how to take care of my baby.
I think the older generation really believed in things like “bigkis”, “pagputol ng pilik mata para humaba” at kahit “paglagay ng gatas sa mukha para kuminis ang balat.” All of these have been medically proven to be untrue. I would stick to my pedia’s advice, but make sure you don’t offend your mom. She is just giving advice out of love.
But I did learn parenting techniques from my mom like how to bathe my child so that water wouldn’t get inside his ears. You have to fold your baby’s ears while supporting his/her head and neck. When you pour water to shampoo, do it slowly.
Regarding whitening your underarms, using calamansi can really help. We did this in our episode before. It however also best to ask your dermatologist.
