Zamboangueña weightlifter Rose Jean Ramos broke the ice for the Philippine team in the Asian Weightlifting Championships, bagging three silver medals in the women’s 45 event on Friday, May 5 in Jinju, South Korea.
The teen weightlifting prodigy continued to live up to the expectation as she collected silvers in the snatch, clean-and-jerk and in total weight. Ramos lifted 73 kilograms in snatch before powering through with an 88kgs lift in the clean-and-jerk for a total weight of 161kgs. She finished behind Sirivimol Pramongkhol of Thailand who ruled the tournament with a 177kgs total lift to bag the gold. She also registered 77kgs in snatch and 100kgs in clean-and-jerk. Siti Hariroh claimed the bronze medal after lifting 71kgs in snatch and 88kgs in clean-and-jerk for a total lift of 159kgs. One of the country’s weightlifting prodigies, Ramos seemed to be on track in her bid for a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics, surpassing her bronze medal finish in last year’s edition of the meet while also bagging two gold medals and a silver in the Youth World Championship in Mexico last year. She also copped three golds in Asian Youth Championship and a gold, a silver and a bronze in the Asian Junior Championships both in Tashkent, Uzbekistan last year.
