The Armed Force of the Philippines (AFP) on Saturday urged the local government units (LGUs) to provide the basic necessities of their constituents, most importantly food, to avoid potential public disorder.

AFP Chief of Staff General Felimon Santos Jr. said the security situation in Luzon, where an enhanced community quarantine is being implemented, remains under control even if false reports about looting and other crimes supposedly due to hunger were being spread on social media.
Â
Santos expressed the military's readiness to assist the LGUs in delivering relief items to those who are most affected to relieve their fears that they might go hungry as the movement of people is restricted.
Â
"Nakikipag-coordinate kami sa mga LGU, nakita niyo ang LGU nagbibigay ng mga pagkain. The national government will support them until such time na matapos itong problema natin (We are coordinating with the LGUs who are providing food for the people. The national government will support them until such time that this problem ends)," the top AFP official stated.
Â
He said he understands that people are anxious because of their restricted movement, that is why he appealed to the LGUs to take the initiative and bring the services to the constituents to prevent the health crisis from becoming a public order and security problem.
Â
Likewise, Santos reiterated his appeal to the public to cooperate and obey the rules set by the national government, including staying at home and practicing social distancing, as these interventions will save not only their lives but also other people's.
Â
"Kaya namin ipinapatupad ito hindi para gipitin ang taumbayan but gusto ko lang ipaliwanag, ang pine-prevent natin ay 'yung virus na hindi siya mag-spread (We are implementing these measures not to give people a hard time but to prevent the virus from spreading)," he said.
Â
"Kaya nililimit ang movement ng tao dahil ang carrier ng virus ay ang tao. Kapag ang isang tao ay infected at lumabas siya, times four ng times four 'yan, sinasabi nilang exponential. We expect na 'yung infected natin na 200-plus, tataas pa 'yan, but hopefully ma-level natin 'yung linya na sinasabi through the interventions," he added.Â
(We are limiting the movement of people because the virus is carried by people. If an infected person goes out, times four and times four again and so on the number of people may get infected, that's what they call exponential . We expect that the 200-plus number of infected will increase, but hopefully we can flatten the curve through the interventions.)
