Two alleged lovers drowned when a huge wave engulfed them and swept them into the sea while standing at the breakwater of the Manila Bay in Port Area, Manila on Sunday afternoon.

The victims, who remained unidentified, were later retrieved by operatives of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) from the bay.

The first victim was identified only as a certain Allan, between 40 to 45 years old, about 5’6” tall, and sporting a moustache and reportedly a resident of Juan Luna St., Binondo, Manila.

The second victim was described only as between 40 to 45 years old, about 5’1” tall, of medium built, fair complexion, and clad in a green shirt, blue jacket, and maong pants. The toenails of both feet were reportedly amputated.

PO3 Jay Santos of the Manila Police District homicide section said the incident happened at 3:30 p.m. at the breakwater of the Manila Bay near the Baseco Compound in Port Area, Manila.

Reports disclosed that before the drowning, the two victims were seen walking along the breakwater and then stopping at the spot where they were swept away by the huge wave.

A witness identified as Joey Enopereo, 20, grocery helper, of Ricaforte St., Tondo, Manila, claimed that he saw the couple kissing when a big wave suddenly engulfed them.

“Biglang may humampas na malaking alon at agad silang natangay papunta sa dagat,” the investigator said.

Enopereo said he immediately jumped into the water to save the couple. But he was forced to return to shore quickly due to the strong current. He reported the incident to the authorities.

After several minutes, PCG operatives were able to fish out the man’s body.

The woman’s body was only recovered after more than 14 hours as she was discovered floating at 6 a.m. yesterday at the Manila Bay at Block 2, Old Site, Baseco compound, Port Area, Manila.

Except for several minor bruises, no external injury was found on the couple. Authorities are now investigating the case.
