A 21-year-old bachelor was shot dead by a security guard who mistook him for a robber when he barged into the construction site of a condominium building in Sta. Mesa, Manila on Saturday morning.

Police identified the fatality as Rommel Perez, jobless, and resident of 2411 G-2 Jesus St., Pandacan, Manila. He died on the spot due to a bullet wound in the body.

Lawmen arrested Oscar Mendez, 44, married, security guard and resident of 332 De Jesus St., Caloocan City.

SPO3 Benito Cabatbat, of the Manila Police District (MPD)-homicide section, said Mendez was guarding the construction site at the Philippine National Construction Corp., (PNCC) compound, El Pueblo condominium, Teresa St., Sta. Mesa, Manila when the incident occurred at 4 a.m.

Mendez said he was guarding the perimeter fence when he saw a group of five men climbing over the fence.

Sensing that the group would rob the compound, he fired a warning shot and the men ran away.

About 15 minutes later, he saw a group of 10 men approaching the compound. As they climbed over the fence, he fired several shots, one of them hitting Perez.
