DOT to build 'rest-and-shop' areas for tourists

The Department of Tourism (DOT) is set to build at least 10 Tourist Rest Areas (TRA) as another effort to boost the tourism industry.

DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said TRA facilities will have a maximum of at least 300 square meter zone and will be filled with a ‘pasalubong center’ inside to promote local products and native artifacts to highlight Filipino artistry.

“These areas will serve travelers in need of accommodation, information, safety, and security,” said Frasco, adding that, the provision of decent and clean restrooms had been one of the long belated concerns of local and foreign tourists traveling the country.

“The Tourist Rest Areas will serve travelers in need of clean restrooms and a place to rest in between their journeys. It will also have an information center and pasalubong center inside displaying our local products, highlighting Filipino artistry. The Tourist Rest Areas will also adopt the use of local materials and design elements that herald the Filipino brand,” she added.

Frasco said the project will be implemented before the end of the year in partnership with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) and with the support of the local government units (LGUs) proponents of the TRA facility.
