As complaints of the late delivery of food packs continue to pour in, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Sunday warned erring barangay officials of sanctions like suspension if they are proven to be guilty of favoritism or ineptness.

Reacting to the people’s grievances, Belmonte called on residents who have yet to receive food packs from the city government to report their barangays to the Office of the Mayor via [email protected].
“We ask our barangay captains and city officials to set aside differences and distribute food packs to the most affected families,” said Belmonte.
She reiterated that favoritism and politics have no place during emergencies reminding them that food packs should be given to those in need, regardless of political affiliation and preference.
Many residents have complained that rogue barangay officials have pilfered the contents of the relief packs provided by the city government.
Local resident Nats Rafael said that Belmonte was sometimes blamed for the late delivery and purloined relief goods. She says, "Si mayor parehas ang nilagay sa relief packs pero yung mga kurakot na taga barangay kinukupit ang laman (The mayor has packed equal proportions of goods in the relief packs but some corrupt barangay officials have pilfered its contents) ."
Belmonte explained that the city’s food relief effort is based on the list of beneficiaries identified and submitted by barangay officials to the local government.
Belmonte explained, however, that the city government’s relief goods are on top of those given by the barangays.
Since each barangay has varying financial capacity, Belmonte said that this would explain why residents from the various barangays received dissimilar food aids.
