Residents of a barangay in Caloocan City have placed a coffin in their public market as a grim reminder for people of the threats of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as many continue to stay outside despite calls from the government to stay at home.

Editha Labasbas, Barangay 178 captain in Camarin, said she was surprised to see that a golden coffin has been put up at the Kiko Market to prompt people to cooperate with the government's efforts.
"Hinahanap ko talaga 'yung may-ari noon. Wala naman po kasing nakalagay. Sabi ko, sino namang punerarya ang nagbigay nito, grabe naman ," Labasbas told the Manila Bulletin in an interview on Tuesday.
"Gold pa. Pang-mayaman ," she jested.
Below the coffin placed atop a wood stand a white tarpaulin with a photo of what appeared to be a Grim Reaper is attached, bearing the words: "Stay at Home or Stay Inside. Kooperasyon at Pasensya.... Huwag Pasaway... 'Di lang kayo ang may pamilya ."
On the cap panel, written on bond paper, are the words: "COVID-19 pasok ang mga matitigas ang ulo ."
According to Labasbas, the coffin seems effective to make people, particularly children, stay at home.
"Medyo nabawasan naman po ang palabas-labas ng bahay. Natakot naman po yung mga kabataan ," she said, adding that she has received various reactions from her constituents, "Yung iba, natakot. Yung iba, nalungkot. Mayroon din natuwa ."
As of Tuesday afternoon, Barangay 178 has had two confirmed cases of COVID-19, the barangay captain said. One of them has died.
Nevertheless, Labasbas said, it is still a struggle for barangay officials to keep residents at home because even the elders do not cooperate.
"Pasaway po talaga mga magulang. Kahit magulang po hindi nila hinahanap anak nila. Pagdating ng gabi, punong puno yung covered court na pinagdadalhan namin ng mga na-rescue namin ," she said.
"Matatapang po. Minumura pa po kami ," Labasbas added.
The barangay head is calling on her almost 160,000 residents to heed the call of the President to practice social distancing and community quarantine.
"Sa mga kabarangay ko, sana po mak-iisa tayo sa panawagan ng ating Pangulong Duterte [To all my constituents, I hope that you cooperate with the calls of the President," she said.
"Sobrang dami na nga po naming ginagawa. dagdag trabaho. Marami pang tao ang aming dapat tulungan, kesa kayo pa ang aming iintindihin ," she added.
