San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora has banned public fireworks display in the city this holiday season amid threats of COVID-19.
Zamora told residents they can still celebrate New Year in a safe way at their own homes to avoid the spread of the disease.
He said all Metro Manila Mayors were asked to pass an ordinance after a resolution signed by Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez was passed by the Regional Peace and Order Council recommending the banning of the use of firecrackers in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Zamora explained that during community fireworks display, people tend to gather in the designated display zone, constituting mass gathering.He said the prohibition of mass gatherings is pursuant to section 4, item 12 of the Omnibus Guidelines on the implementation of Community Quarantine in the Philippines with Ammendments as of Nov. 19Â Â
