Marcos won't invite ICC; says 'we don't play politics with sovereignty'

Allowing the International Criminal Court (ICC) to conduct its investigation on the deadly  drug war during former president Rodrigo Duterte's term would be a political move, Marcos said.

And he is not keen on playing such a move even with the perceived alliance rupture between him and the Dutertes, stressing that politics must not be mixed with his administration's effort to protect the country's sovereignty.

"No, that would be a political move. We do not play politics with jurisdiction and sovereignty," Marcos said when asked in an interview with ABC's Sarah Ferguson if he intended to invite the ICC in the Philippines to conduct its investigation "more fully " into the murderous war on drugs.

Marcos maintained his stance on the issue, reiterating that he does not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC and its probe is a "threat in our sovereignty."

He articulated that the ICC's role does not apply to the Philippines which has a functioning police force and judiciary system.

"[T]he ICC was formed to conduct, to provide justice to areas where there is no judiciary, where there is no court system, where there is no police, where there is no peace and order and that's not the Philippines. I don't think that their investigation applies to the Philippines," Marcos said.

The President emphasized that providing justice for the thousands of lives claimed by the drug war is the country's enforcement and judiciary system's responsibility, claiming that "we have made a great deal of progress in that regard."

"We in the Philippines have, as I said, a functioning police force, a functioning judiciary, and it is their responsibility to take care of that. We have made a great deal of progress in that regard, where the many policemen have already been removed from service because they have been found to be liable, cases have been filed,  many are already in jail," he said.

While Marcos stated last month that he would neither deny nor approve the presence of ICC investigators in the Philippines, he maintained his stance that the ICC has no jurisdiction over the Philippines.
