Go along with Yaya and Angelina’s misadventures
“Yaya and Angelina: The Spoiled Brat Movie” doesn’t only tell the back-story of the popular segment on GMA-7’s gag show “Bubble Gang” but it also sets the future for the unlikely duo, which pretty much remains a love-hate relationship.
At the start of the movie jointly produced by GMA Films and APT Entertainment under the direction of Michael Tuviera, we learn that seven-year-old Angelina (played by Ogie Alcasid) goes from one nanny to another because she always plays nasty tricks on them, so they end up quitting.
The spoiled brat finally meets a match in Rosalinda Lucero, nicknamed Cha-cha thus Angelina’s favorite one-liner for her new nanny: “Whatever, Yaya, you’re such a loser!”
Yaya (Michael V) has infinite – if not sadistic – tolerance, patience, and understanding for Angelina, but she is pushed to the edge when Angelina’s parents (Jomari Yllana and Aiko Melendez) fire her for a misdemeanor instigated by her mischievous ward.
She only changes her heart when Angelina’s life is put to danger by terrorists led by the beautiful but evil Eve (Iza Calzado). Of course, she again comes to the brat’s rescue, and together they thwart Eve’s plan for the de rigueur happy ending with a twist as the movie’s punch line.
“Yaya and Angelina” teems with punch lines that work best for fans of the “Bubble Gang” segment and the gag show itself because the movie uses some references from it. Sometimes, though, the jokes illicit mere chuckles like in the scenes involving Dennis Trillo in a cameo.
The trick of resizing Ogie into a seven-year-old is awesome in some scenes but oftentimes it’s quite obvious that the actor only looks shorter because he is either kneeling or a real kid is used as his double. Another glaring example of budget constraint is the execution of the climax which in turn compromised the believability of the planned terrorist attack.
Good thing Michael V and Ogie are committed actors who work hard to make the viewers focus on their performances and their chemistry – not on the movie’s limitations. This way, one can happily go along with Yaya and Angelina’s misadventures.
