Seattle Sound progenitor Pearl Jam back on top
Veteran grunge band Pearl Jam is back at number one on the Billboard album chart this week with their brand new album, “Backspacer.”
Pearl Jam, which sold 189,000 copies of “Backspacer” in the U.S. on its first week out, dislodges rapper Jay-Z with his two-week-reign via “Blueprint 3.”
“Backspacer” is the band’s fourth number one album and their first since 1996’s “No Code” which sold 367,000 copies on its first week of release.
Pearl Jam’s previous number one albums were 1993’s “VS.” and 1994’s “Vitalogy.” The band’s last CD was 2006’s self-titled album under J Records that peaked at number two on the album chart.
Pearl Jam is one of the biggest bands of the grunge (sometimes referred to as the “Seattle Sound”) era of the 90s that included Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, among others.
In the UK this week, Madonna is top of the pops with her greatest hits set, “Celebration.”
The album, according to a Warner Bros. Records press statement, is “the ultimate compilation of Madonna songs, remastered and selected by the singer and covers the expanse of the Material Girl’s extraordinary career from ‘Everybody’ and ‘Express Yourself’ to ‘Vogue’ and ‘4 Minutes.’”
Looking at the top ten singles in Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, Black Eyed Peas retains the number one spot for the 14th time this week with “I Gotta Feeling.” The group matches Mariah Carey’s feat with her 2005 hit, “We Belong Together,” for the longest stay at number one spot this decade.
Meanwhile, Jay Sean’s “Down” (feat. Lil Wayne) is up a step at number two, Miley Cyrus surges up to number three from last week’s number six and Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West’s “Run This Town” drops two notches down to number four.
“Whatcha Say” by Jason Derulo gains five steps up to finish at number five while teen country pop singer Taylor Swift is down two rungs to settle at number six.
Fresh from her attention-grabbing performance at the VMA’s, Lady Gaga latches on the number seven spot with “Paparazzi.” Kings Of Leon returns to the top ten chart with “Use Somebody” as does Mariah Carey with “Obsessed.”
Jay-Z closes this week’s top ten singles run with the Alicia Keys-featured single, “Empire State Of Mind.”
