ER at Manila hospital temporarily closed; COVID-19 ward, isolation wards at 'full capacity'

The emergency room (ER) of Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center (GABMMC) will be temporarily closed starting Monday (July 20) after its facilities for coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) patients reached full capacity.

In a memorandum released Monday, GABMMC Director Ted Martin said the ER will be closed from 12 p.m. on Monday until 12 p.m. on Thursday (July 23).

Martin said the hospital's COVID-19 ward has reached 100-percent capacity, while its isolation tents are "beyond full capacity, with pending COVID-19 confirmed patient admissions."

The memo stated that there are 76 COVID-related cases currently admitted at the hospital. Of this number, 52 are confirmed COVID-19 patients.

At least 53 of its hospital staff, including four doctors and 12 nurses, have also contracted the disease and are undergoing quarantine.

The hospital director said terminal cleaning and disinfection activities will be conducted at the ER during the closure.

On April 28, the ER was also closed for a week after eight of its hospital staff tested positive for COVID-19.
