Romualdez vows House will pass laws beneficial to Pinoy teachers

House Speaker Martin Romualdez vowed on Wednesday, Oct. 5, to seek ways for the lower chamber to enact legislation that will benefit the country’s teachers.

In paying tribute to Filipino teachers, Romualdez said they “will remain steadfast in finding ways and means to legislate laws” that will protect their rights and promote their welfare.

He acknowledged the sacrifices of teachers and their valuable contribution to the nation as he honored them during the celebration of #NationalTeachersDay.

“This special occasion aptly reminds us of the great services that our teachers contribute in value-formation and nation-building throughout the years,” the Leyte lawmaker said.

In his statement, Romualdez also said he was grateful to the country’s educators for still fulfiling their duties despite the Covid-19

pandemic.

“Sa aming mga guro, maraming salamat po sa inyong malasakit at serbisyo (To our teachers, thank you very much for your concern and service). Your commitment to duty and diligent efforts, especially in the age of pandemic, is deeply appreciated. Hindi po namin malilimutan ang lahat ng naituro ninyo (We will never forget everything you’ve taught us). You will remain in our hearts, forever,” Romualdez said.

On #NationalTeachersDay, some lawmakers called for the improvement of teachers’ welfare by reducing their workload and teaching time, and they get salary increase and funding for special education programs (SPED).

These are ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro, Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua, and Quezon City 2nd District Rep. Ralph Tulfo.

On Tuesday, Oct. 4, more than 50,000 public school teachers sought congressional help through a petition in raising their entry-level salaries to Salary Grade (SG) 15 or P35,097 per month.

The Speaker noted that the role and importance of teachers in development of students and society, saying their fellow Filipinos’ gratitude must be accorded to them.

“I encourage all to make it our solemn duty to pay tribute to teachers and thank them for their contributions whenever given the chance to do so,” the Speaker said.

“God bless, our dear teachers, and may the Lord continue to shower you with his love and affection. Mabuhay po kayong lahat (Long live to all of you)!” Romualdez said.
