Sonsona to defend title vs Mexican
BAGUIO CITY – World Boxing Organization (WBO) superflyweight champion Marvin “Marvelous” Sonsona will defend his crown against a tough Mexican fighter on November 21 in Canada.
Sonsona, who will be arriving in this mountain resort city to spend four weeks of high altitude training, will face Mexican brawler Alejandro Hernandez in a 12-round title bout.
Sonsona was scheduled to arrive in the city last week but he cancelled it due to bad weather.
Sonsona, who owns an immaculate 14-0 record – 12 by knockouts – is being trained by Nonito Donaire Sr. the father of Nonito Donaire Jr., one of the country’s respected world champions.
“The Sonsona camp was awed by the respect shown by Baguio and Benguet residents to the on going training of Filipino boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao, thus, they want to hold their high altitude training in our beloved city. We will welcome Marvin the same way that we welcomed Pacquiao,” said Rufino Panagan, a local boxing promoter.
The 19-year-old pride of General Santos City dethroned Puerto Rican Jose Luis Lopez in a grueling encounter last month to win the crown.
“We believe Marvin will be following the footsteps of Pacquiao because of his dedication and hard work. Hernandez is no pushover but he could hurdle the test with enough preparations,” said Panagan.
Hernandez is known to be a brawler and a tough fighter.
Sonsona will be holding his workouts at the Panagan gymnasium here and will hold his roadwork around the city in order to boost his resistance and stamina for his upcoming title defense.
