‘Reb Bel’ rants at Facebook critics
Former child actor Dranreb Belleza thinks Pampanga Representative Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo is haughty for suggesting future censorship of social networking sites like Facebook.
The presidential son recently complained about the autonomy being enjoyed by users of Facebook in light of the proliferation of a picture uploaded to the site that purportedly showed him buying liquor in the aftermath of typhoon Ondoy.
“He should get off his high horse,” Belleza says about Arroyo. “He is making too big a deal out of this thing.”
Belleza went on to twit Arroyo for being a “hypocrite.”
“I’m sorry… but really, is he trying to paint himself as a saint?” he asks mockingly.
Belleza is among over 60 million users of the popular site. He lauds it for giving the people a “voice.”
“It doesn’t discriminate. It provides everyone equal opportunity to sound off. It allows all to be heard whereas the old guards—and I mean people in newspapers and magazines—only allow a select few to say their thing. Facebook doesn’t show favoritism. Best of all, it’s free.”
He admits, though, that there are some people who use the site all too liberally. He cites himself as an example of one who has fallen prey to this misuse of freedom.
“There are (Facebook) accounts out there using my name and sometimes my image without my consent—pretenders,” he reveals.
“But it doesn’t matter…we can’t be too fascist. We can’t go out there and try to control everything. One thing that (writer, critic) sir Conrado de Quiros taught me is that we should share, and (to do so) freely. I believe in that.”
If anything, Belleza is rallying against those out to malign his friends via the ‘net—chief among them the blogger known as Brianboy.
“He’s off my list. I don’t care if he is friends with Marc Jacobs. He betrayed me…he betrayed us. He hurt my friend Chuvaness (of Chuvaness.com) and I resent him for that.”
Another of Belleza’s least favorite people is Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
“I respect her as a mother, but I could never respect her as president. I cannot respect anybody who cheats. Long live Magdalo!”
Aside from updating his Facebook page, Belleza is busy with his painting career.
“I haven’t stopped painting. I finish almost 40 paintings a day, in fact.”
But he hasn’t planned for a public exhibition of his work.
“I’m not yet ready. Actually, (the decision when to hold it is) up to (visual artist) Rock Drilon. We’re still looking for a proper venue (for an exhibit).”
Belleza is not keen on reviving his once thriving acting career.
“If ever (I return to showbiz), I’d rather work behind the camera as director.”
