'Bridge of hope' to make education more accessible

By Merlina Hernando-Malipot  In an effort to make education more accessible in the country, a bridge in Basilan will soon be built to help ensure that no one - especially students - will be left behind. (Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation / MANILA BULLETIN) (Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation / MANILA BULLETIN) The Grace & Mercy Foundation partners with Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation (YBHF) to help build the Yellow Bridge of Hope in Maluso, Basilan – connecting the Sama-Badjaus to the mainland and ensuring that no Badjau “will be left behind.” The Grace & Mercy Foundation and YBHF also signed a partnership in aiming to make education more accessible in the Philippines. US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Yong Kim, Chairman and CEO of AMCHAM Korea James Kim, President of Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation Doc Anton Mari Lim and Department of Education (DepEd) Assistant Secretary G.H. Ambat, together with the YBHF Hope Paddlers, recently gathered to witness the forging of the partnership. “This only shows that friendship and bond among countries giving hope to one another will definitely give hope to the next generations,” the YBHF said in a statement. Hope Paddlers from Philippines, New York, Indonesia and South Korea all decided to care and help make the world a better place for kids. Grace & Mercy Foundation, spearheaded by philantrophist Bill Hwang, founder of Archegos Capital Management and Grace & Mercy Foundation, granted a donation worth $50,000 to YBHF to help build the Yellow Bridge of Hope in Maluso, Basilan. Maluso is a coastal community in Basilan. It is home to families from different indigenous groups of people like Sama-Badjau who only use a dilapidated collapsing old wooden bridge to reach the mainland. This is also where the Yellow School of Hope is located. This floating primary school is a joint project of Claret Samal Foundation and Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation that exclusively serves the Samal-Bajaus IP’s in Sitio Tehemen in Maluso. Aiming to help the community in Maluso to have a safe and reliable bridge that would help them reach the mainland, YBHF together with their partners in Grace & Mercy Foundation will be constructing the Yellow Bridge of Hope. “This will not just help the school kids but also the whole community in reviving and betterment of their livelihood,” the YBHF said. “Bringing hope to kids where it’s needed and bringing more people from different parts of the world answering the call where help is needed,” the YBHF said. Given this, the foundation also called on stakeholders’ support to help ensure that “no kid is left behind.”
