Hunt on for alias 'Kamah,' 2 other accomplices as Jolo blast persons-of-interest

By Martin Sadongdong Police are now hot on the trail of an alias "Kamah" and two other persons-of-interest believed to be behind the deadly bomb attacks at a church in Jolo, Sulu last January 27 which left at least 21 people dead and 112 others wounded. In a text message to The Manila Bulletin late Monday night, Philipine National Police (PNP) chief, Director General Oscar Albayalde confirmed the identity of one of the persons-of-interest as Kamah. (PNP / MANILA BULLETIN) (PNP / MANILA BULLETIN) The PNP Chief said Kamah was the one seen wearing a blue green jacket near the cathedral moments before the explosion, based on a closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage obtained by authorities. He was seen in the footage in the company of two others near the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral, or the Jolo Cathedral. At one point, the man was seen giving something to his companion, who was wearing a cap and bag, but they were abruptly cut when the first blast occured. In another CCTV footage, the man was seen successfully passing on something to a companion. Panic ensued and the people started running away including the three men. However, the man in blue green jacket ran in an opposite direction. The young man in blue green jacket was said to be Kamah, who may have detonated the bombs. Albayalde said that Kamah belongs to the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) sub-group Ajang-Ajang, which was earlier tagged by the military as the one behind the Jolo Cathedral blast last Sunday. "Ajang-Ajang is no different to Abu Sayyaf Group. The ASG is using younger fighters to carry out offensive attacks. The members of Ajang-Ajang are either the orphans of the ASG or their relatives," Albayalde said in a separate television interview Tuesday. No other details have been disclosed as to the identity of Kamah, but a report from radio DZMM said he is a brother of slain ASG leader Surakah Ingog. "This group is originally from Sulu, that is where their lair is. We only know his alias but the investigators said he is known in the community because he lives there," Albayalde added. Albayalde said they have yet to establish if what Kamah was trying to pass on to his companion was the trigger to the bombs. "Our EOD believes the bombs were electronically-detonated so we have to determine whether it was the cellphone that he was giving to his companions," Albayalde noted. He also appealed to residents of Jolo to inform the authorities about the real identity of Kamah and his two other companions. "They are considered persons-of-interest because we're trying to establish here whether it's only a coincidence that they were near the church when this incident happened or they have something to do with it," Albayalde explained. 'Act of terror' The police have yet to establish the motive behind the attack, but Albayalde said they couldn't see any link between the incident and the recently held Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), which seeks to establish a new Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Although the BOL was deemed ratified, Sulu province rejected the BOL, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec). "We see it as a plain act of terror. We couldn't see anything that would link this incident to the plebiscite," he said. Earlier, the Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the Jolo blast. And according to the military and police, the Abu Sayyaf Group has already pledged its allegiance to ISIS. Death toll The country's top cop also raised the possibility that the number of casualties will rise as dismembered parts were found by the investigators underneath the rubbles. "We are still identifying at least two . There were dismembered parts that our men on the ground have discovered," Albayalde disclosed. As of writing, the death toll already stood at 21.
