Solons welcome Manila Water executive's resignation

House members welcomed the recent resignation of Manila Water Chief Operating Officer (COO) Geodino Carpio amid the persisting water supply shortage in the concessionaire's service area.

"Resignation is the least that he can do in responding to the call of accountability to his office," said Deputy Minority Leader, AKO-Bicol Party-List Rep. Alfredo Garbin Jr.
At any rate, Garbin commended Carpio "for his sense of accountability by way of resignation for failure to fulfill the mandate of his office."
"What is foremost now is the immediate restoration of continuous and uninterrupted supply of water to their consumers, including me and my household, which has been suffering for more than a month now due to intermittent supply of water," the lawyer-congressman pointed out.
For his part, Surigao del Sur 2nd district Rep. Johnny Pimentel described Carpio's voluntary exit from Manila Water as "appropriate."
"It's just appropriate that he resigned considering that he was not able to resolve the water crisis in spite of the order of the President to give an immediate solution," said Pimentel, a former chairman of the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability.
The Ayala-owned Manila Water, which services Metro Manila’s east zone, said Carpio's resignation took effect upon the close of business hours last April 16. The company named Abelardo Basilio as acting COO.
Last month, the House of Representatives held an inquiry on the water shortage wherein the congressmen demanded that Manila Water's consumers be duly compensated, or else face a class action suit.
Garbin followed up on this notion and called on regulator Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) to act on the matter.
"By way of exacting accountability, the regulators should also impose fines and penalties to the water concessionaires and should implement rebates at the soonest time," the Bicolano said.
