Spot promotion for policeman who shot suspected cop killer
A Quezon City policeman has been lined up for promotion after killing two suspected robbers, one of whom is also suspected as a cop killer.
Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director Chief Superintendent Elmo San Diego said Wednesday he has recommended for spot promotion SPO3 Levi Sevilla of the Talipapa police station.
“SPO3 Levi Sevilla of Talipapa Police Station (PS-3) displayed extraordinary acts of bravery and sheer dedication to duty and a promotion to the next higher rank is fitting recognition of his heroic exploit,” San Diego said.
The QCPD chief said that last October 10 Sevilla responded to a robbery incident and was able to kill two of three suspects in the robbery of an Indian national. During the incident, robbers killed one barangay watchmen and hurt two other tanod.
Chief Inspector Benjamin Elenzano, deputy chief of QCPD’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU), said that one of the slain suspects is Efren Ponce, 38.
Citing information from the Caloocan police, Elenzano said Ponce is allegedly a notorious robber in Caloocan City and leader of gang operating in Bulacan.
Elenzano said that Ponce is also suspected to have killed two policemen, SPO1 Wilson Reyes and PO3 Rommel Mariblanca, in Caloocan.
Reyes and Mariblanca were among four policemen who arrested Ponce in a robbery case in 2004.
At that time, Ponce tried to escape during inquest proceedings but got shot in the leg and captured by the same policemen. Ponce eventually got released on bail.
Elenzano said that according to Caloocan police Ponce apparently was targeting the policemen who had arrested him for revenge.
The police official said that Ponce was the one of the suspects behind the deaths of Reyes and Mariblanca.
Reyes survived an ambush last year which but got killed in a second ambush last March.
