Smart Basics

Great for reliable basic wear and the well-made jacket, coat, and sweater, United Colors of Benetton presents a new collection featuring a diverse range of materials, colors, and inspirations.
“Smart Start,” a collection for women, is predicated on the “elegant, self-aware woman, who avoids exaggeration.” Chic, little coats or short jackets in jacquard, waffle, or ottoman fabrics; satin crepe cocktail dresses and edgy trousers; close-fitting tops in stripes or all-over prints, in soft, drapey jersey. Knitwear reveals discreet patterns of cables and diamonds. Classic poplin for shirts rounds off the collection.
Brit Taste, also for women, is a strictly formal silhouette with sober, figure-hugging lines to enhance femininity. And trousers borrow from equestrian sports. Celebrating British textiles, like tweed or Prince of Wales patterns for short coats, Oxford for the classic shirt, and Shetland for knits.
Cabbage Patch Dolls, meanwhile, offer women an abundance of colors and various fabrics teamed with soft, rounded, enveloping shapes with a vaguely childish look. A journey around the world of folk-romantic “dolls.” Slightly shrunk wool and cotton for a soft, cozy look. Salt-and-pepper-effect, macro checks and chevron patterns on skirts and outerwear. Rubber-coated, bomber-style nylon, padded jackets.
Collections for men include The Architect, a style somewhere between classic and casual to reflect his attention to details and quality, not forgetting functionality and comfort; The Photo Reporter, for the man who likes to wear army green, khaki and mottled gray but who doesn’t say no to the more unusual brick-red, turquoise or natural white; and The Writer, a man who appreciates the simplicity of life. He needs only a few things in order to live well, but they have to be distinctive and, above all, practical.
