SSC turns back Benilde, wins NCAA volley title
Analyn Joy Benito bid goodbye to her college career in style helping San Sebastian win its fifth consecutive NCAA women's volleyball championship after a 25-23, 26-24, 25-15 win of College of Saint Benilde in Sunday's winner-take-all match at the Emilio Aguinaldo College gym.
Benito scored a game-high 19 points, many of them came in the first two sets, and emerged as the league's Most Valuable Player.
Benito was ably supported by Margarita Pepito, who added 15 points as the Recto-based volleybelles won their 16th overall crown.
"Ito na siguro ang pinakamahirap na championship dahil madaming nawala sa team at kailangang magstep-up yung mga veterans," said SSC-R coach Roger Gorayeb, whose team lost stars Lou Ann Latigay, Mary Jane Pepito, Ryza Devanadera, and Charisse Ancheta this season.
It was an anti-climactic end to a thrilling finals series after both teams split the first two games by five sets.
Giza Yumang scored 13 points to lead CSB while Katty Kwan and lanky Zharmaine Velez combined for 16 points but their efforts were not enough as the upset-hungry Lady Blazers failed to beat the Lady Stags in the finals for the third consecutive season.
