Customs ready for the massive sacking; says they have enough people to fill in posts

By Betheena Unite Once the President names the more than 50 Customs high-ranking officials and employees who will be sacked due to the lingering corruption in the agency, the bureau will be ready and willing to abide. Maronilla noted that once this happens, the bureau will have enough manpower to fill the positions left by the fired officials and personnel, stressing that they can also get an augmentation from the Philippine Coast Guard and Armed Forces of the Philippines, who have been deployed in the bureau to assist in its operations. "We have already trained personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard and Armed Forces of the Philippines under a memorandum of agreement and we can utilize them to assist and augment certain positions that are not by law exclusively vested to customs officers to hold," Maronilla said. Yesterday, Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo bared that the President will sack more than 50 customs officials and personnel. "Ngayon 50 lang naman 'yan, we have around 3000 pa na employees, may mga bagong hires din kami and those new hires might be called to fill in na rin (That's just 50, now we have around 3,000 employees and we also have newly hired employees and those new hires might be called to fill in the positions)," Maronilla added. As of the moment, the bureau is still clueless on the personalities involved in the upcoming major revamp. Meantime, Maronilla said, they are "coordinating and taking steps on towards how to implement the instruction of the president." "As far is the commissioner is concerned there were initial talks and he submitted reports to the president. We just don't have a more detailed decision coming from the president now but our commissioner is coordinating with regard to some reports that he received and forwarded to the president," Maronilla added. Earlier, a major revamp on the leadership within the bureau involving nine key positions, mostly positions of district collectors in various ports, took place.(
