Storm signals up in Northern Luzon as "Ramil" nears

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Tuesday raised storm signals 1 and 2 in some parts of Northern Luzon as Typhoon "Ramil" (internationally named "Lupit") slowly approaches the region.
As of 11 a.m. on Tuesday, typhoon "Ramil", which entered the Philippine area of responsibility over the weekend, was spotted 820 kilometers East Northeast of Aparri, Cagayan, moving west at a speed of 17 kilometers/hour (kph) and carrying maximum sustained winds of 195 kph and gustiness of about 230 kph.
The said development prompted Pagasa to raise public storm warning signals over various Northern Luzon areas. Signal No.2 is now up over the Batanes Group of Islands, Cagayan, Calayan Islands, Babuyan Islands, and Isabela. Signal No. 1, on the other hand, has been raised over Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Aurora, and Polillo Island.
The weather bureau also advised residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes among the affected provinces to closely monitor any further developments on the typhoon and take all the necessary precautions against flashfloods and landslides.
"The eye of the typhoon may not hit land but the typhoon's circulation will affect provinces in the North," Pagasa director Nathaniel Cruz said on an interview on Monday.
